The Office of Diversity and Inclusion serves in a coordinating role for a core team of offices  from across the campus with diversity-related functions.   Diversity and Inclusion Core Team Members  provide leadership and resources for the Council on Diversity and Inclusion and maintain their current reporting lines within their divisions.  Rice University's Mission Statement, which establishes the basic framework for diversity and inclusion in all of our endeavors states, "As a leading research university with a distinctive commitment to undergraduate education, Rice University aspires to pathbreaking research, unsurpassed teaching, and contributions to the betterment of our world.  It seeks to fulfill this mission by cultivating a diverse community of learning and discovery that produces leaders across the spectrum of human endeavor."

Council on Diversity and Inclusion (CODI)

The Council on Diversity and Inclusion serves as the administrative vehicle for achieving campus wide objectives.  The Council is chaired by the Associate Provost for Diversity and Inclusion and council members are appointed to one year terms by the President.  The council's objectives will be achieved through working groups and the working group chairs hold a seat on the council.  Specific Council working groups include:

  • Faculty Recruitment and Development
  • Faculty Research, Centers, Institutes and Programs
  • Gender and Sexuality
  • International Students and Scholars

GRADUATE RECRUITMENT AND RETENTION

The Office of Diversity and Inclusion, with its objective to support and guide Rice by facilitating a campus environment that promotes diversity, inclusion, and academic achievement, has institutionalized campus-wide programs in the areas of recruitment and retention efforts for underrepresented populations on the doctoral level. Based on lessons learned with the Alliances for Graduate Education and the Professoriate (AGEP) Program, initiatives will be implemented to ensure students' success through mechanisms in the form of mentoring, professional development, and community-building activities, as well as assisting with the navigation of financial support..

Rice Nominators Circle

Initiated in 1998, the Rice University Nominator's Circle consists of K-12 teachers, counselors, administrators, and community leaders who assist Rice in identifying and reaching out to under-represented students of color. Each year a new group visits Rice University for an orientation and workshop about the admissions and financial aid process. <more>

Outreach Programs

Mellon Mays Fellowship

The fundamental objective of MMUFP is to increase the number of minority students, and others with a demonstrated commitment to eradicating racial disparities, who will pursue PhDs in core fields in the arts and sciences. <more>

RICE INSTITUTIONAL MEMBERSHIPS 

Barbara Jordan

The Barbara Jordan scholarship program, named for the first black woman elected to the Texas Legislature and the U.S. Congress, provides support for a group of Rice freshman who display the qualities of the late congresswoman. <more>
